Myrte van Lonkhuijsen lactatiekundige
Since the year 2000 I have been working fulltime as a lactationconsultant. Looking for solutions to breastfeeding problems together with parents. Which includes the more ‘technical’ aspects of latching on and managin milkproduction. Yet at least as important is fitting breastfeeding into the daily life, making it part of normal familylife. Something which in our culture is not always selfevident.

My former training/job was as an educational scientist at Amsterdam University. A background which I cherish, since breastfeeding is so much more than just feeding a baby. Like parenting and education, breastfeeding requires constant interaction and adaptation between parents and child(ren). Adaptation to growth, to needs, to changing capacities and circumstances.

That is what still fascinates me after all these years.

Even more so since my workfield has become much broader over the years. Not only do I work directly with parents and child, I also teach both (expecting) parents and professionals. Added tot his I now form part of national organisations concerning breastfeeding. Which gives me the unique opportunity to form a link between policydevelopment and direct consequences for daily breastfeeding. And to incorporate new findings or policy into professional education. Theory and practice go hand in hand, which allows me to use my experience to the full.
